Prof. Robert Hurt

Brown University, USA

Professor Robert Hurt is a faculty member in the Division of Engineering at Brown University, USA and Director of Brown's interdisciplinary molecular and nanosciences institute, IMNI. IMNI is a "polydisciplinary" organization with 55 faculty investigators engaged in research on advanced materials, soft condensed matter, nanomedicine, and nanotoxicology. Professor Hurt received his B.S in chemical engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1982 and his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1987. Prior to his employment at Brown, he held posts in Central Research and Development at Bayer AG in Leverkusen, Germany and at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California. His current research interests span carbon nanomaterials, metallic and semi-metallic nanomaterials, liquid crystals, self-assembly and interfacial phenomena, and energy and environmental nanotechnologies. A major current focus is the use of materials chemistry tools for the active design and formulation of nanomaterials for environmental safety and health. He serves as an Editor for the archival materials science journal Carbon, and is on the editorial boards of three other international journals. He has received the Silver Medal of the Combustion Institute in 1996 and the Graffin Lecture Award of the American Carbon Society in 2004.
